A suicide bomber has killed an elderly couple after blowing self using an Improvised Explosive Device ( IED) on Tuesday night in Katito, Nyakach Kisumu county.
According to police sources, the suspect who was identified as John Odhiambo had returned home from Somalia and used locally manufactured explosive which he tied around his waist before approaching the couple and detonating himself.
Confirming the incident to the media, Nyakach OCPD Daniel Chacha said the suspect died on the spot after detonating himself at the couple’s home around 10 pm local time.
“The suspect went to the home of the couple, engaged them in conversation, then detonated the device,” said Chacha.
The attacker who is said to be a class five dropout is reported have left home five years ago for Mombasa where he reportedly joined joined the Al-Qaeda affiliate group Al-Shabaab and later came back from Somalia.
Nyanza regional police boss Karanja Muiruri said bomb experts are investigating the incident and said the attack bares the hallmark of terrorism.
Kenya has been facing major attacks from the Somali based militants groups who usually stage attacks in Kenya’s soil with the most notable attack being the Garissa university attack in 2015 which left more 130 students dead and scores injured.
