MOGADISHU- Somalia’s Federal Government has called on the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to immediately investigate circumstances under which the death of five Somali Nationals who were found frozen to death at the Greek-Turkish border occured.
Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said it has been regrettably informed about the death of five Somali migrants along Greek-Turkish border and extended its condolences to the families and loved ones.
“The Federal of Somalia has been regrettably informed that the migrants found frozen to death along the Greek- Turkish border included five Somali nationals,” said the ministry.
The Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu had shared on his Twitter handle, posted images of bodies of migrants strewn by the roadside near the northwestern border town of Ipsala with some wearing only wearing underwears lest the cold weather.
Soylu said the 12 were part of a larger group that had been “pushed back” by Greece and slammed Greek border authorities of compelling the pushing back of the migrants causing their death.
Turkey and Greek have been at loggerheads over the management of migrants who annually cross into the two border while headed for Europe.
