GARISSA– His Excellency Governor Nathif Jama this morning launched several drought intervention measures to alleviate the suffering of residents affected by the ongoing drought.
The interventions being undertaken by the County Government in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, Save the Children and the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) will benefit 150,000 households in various parts of the county.
3,500 vulnerable households in Lagdera and Balambala will be receiving assorted food baskets courtesy of the County Government.
45,900 households including 20 schools and 5 health facilities in Sankuri, Modogashe, Maalimin, Abakaile, Lagdera, Fafi, Balambala and Township will benefit from water trucking courtesy of NDMA and the County Emergency Locust Project (ELRP).
ELRP will also distribute 20 plastic tanks of 10,000 litres for water storage. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will give another four 10,000 litres collapsible water tanks for 20,000 households in Lagdera, Fafi and Balambala.
350,000 livestock for at least 5,000 households will benefit from a vaccination drive targeting 16,000 breeding and lactating stock courtesy of the County Emergency Locust Project (ELRP), Kenya Redcross and Save the Children.
2,000 households in Lagdera, Balambala, Dadaab, Ijara and Hulugho will benefit from 4,000 bags of livestock feeds supplements from the County Emergency Locust Project (ELRP) and Save the Children.
Speaking at the occasion, Governor Nathif reaffirmed his government’s commitment to providing both short-term and long-term solutions to drought by investing in community-based resilience and drought preparedness programmes.
The County boss emphasized that the County Government is focused on implementing interventions that will build resilience in all the vulnerable households, diversify livelihoods from drought-sensitive activities to drought-resilient ones as well as improve on early warning and impact forecasting systems.
He thanked all stakeholders including humanitarian agencies and development partners for supporting the County Government’s drought response measures.
