Somaliland Electoral delegates have today in the capital Mogadishu elected the last slots of three lawmakers to the House of People concluding the elections for all 46 seats reserved to the region.
Samsam Mohamed Omar, Mohamed Ibrahim Adi and Abdirahman Iidan Yoonis clinched 243, 206 and 259 seats respectively bringing to an end the exercise that was marred by controversy for more four months.
Somali Parliamentary elections commenced on October 2021 and has slowly slithered due to spats and differences between top leaders particularly Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo which put the exercise on the verge of collapse.
In the case of Somaliland, fierce rivalry between Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guled and outgoing Senate Speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi over who controls the exercise threatened to derail the process.
However, intervention from Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble saved the situation and the duo were brought at the table to work out their differences and support the successive completion of the poll.
In Some States, the election has and continues to lag behind as the deadline for the completion of the ongoing Lower House elections get nearer. For instance,
Hirshabelle State only elected 14 MPs out of the 38 allocated to them while Jubbaland State conducted the election of 15 MPs out of the 43 seats in the state.
Since the elections began following the National Consultative Assembly chaired by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble only 153 MPs out of 275 have been elected to the 11th Parliament.
